PAINTING PORTRAITS
My love for the human figure has led me to explore the human face, and paint portraits, vibrant in colour and rich with texture. I begin with sketching the face with either pencil or a base color, and then I apply paint in layers to achieve the desired effect. I always work from real life when possible, as the true character of the person is captured much better if they are posing for me live, but I can work from a photo of the person easily if I already know them, and if the photo taken was successful in capturing their expression.What I have discovered when painting a portrait is that getting a person's eyes right is crucial. They say the eyes are the windows into the soul. So, if you really want to embody the soul of your model, you must get the eyes right! I find that a good way to achieve a successful portrait is to focus on one or two of the model's facial features, which makes them stand out in the painting.In the end, capturing the essence of the person's personality, their true character rather than creating an exact physical resemblance, is what matters. I always try to translate the feel of the moment at the time they were posing
or when their photo was taken, into my choice of artistic medium. A good way to check if I have achieved a good portrait is to ask the subject of the painting themselves if they like the finished piece - if they feel that it is a good representation of who they are, then I am pleased.
